Our calculator is based on the scientifically recognized fact that the human body sleeps in **90-minute cycles**. Each cycle involves moving from light sleep into deep REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Waking up during a deep sleep phase leads to **sleep inertia** (that heavy, groggy feeling).
**SleepSmartCalc** works by calculating your **ideal wake up time** to coincide precisely with the end of one of these 90-minute periods (aiming for 4, 5, or 6 cycles), plus a mandatory 15-minute buffer for the time it takes the average person to fall asleep. This ensures you wake up during the lightest phase of sleep.
